Gili Meno Underwater Statues - Nest Reef

The Gili Meno underwater statues, also known as the Nest, are one of the most photographed snorkeling spots in Indonesia. Designed by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the circle of life-size human figures lies just off the coast of Gili Meno. Over the years, the statues have been transformed into a living reef, covered in coral and surrounded by colorful fish.

Location

The statues are located just off the west coast of Gili Meno, about 10 minutes by boat from Gili Trawangan or Gili Air. The site is shallow and can also be accessed directly from the beach if you are staying on Gili Meno.

Snorkeling Conditions

The statues rest at a depth of three to five meters, which makes them clearly visible from the surface. The best time to visit is in the morning between 9 and 11 AM when the sun lights up the sculptures and the sea is calmer. Visibility usually ranges between ten and twenty meters, though it can change depending on currents. Beginners can enjoy floating at the surface, while confident swimmers may try freediving for closer views.

What You Will See

The Nest is a mix of art and marine conservation. The 48 statues are arranged in a circle, representing life and renewal. Over time, coral has begun to cover the sculptures, creating shelter for reef fish and adding new color to the scene. You can expect to see angelfish, damselfish, parrotfish, and sometimes even small turtles passing by.

Tips for Visitors

Because the site is very popular, it can get crowded with boats during late morning and midday. To enjoy it with fewer people, visit earlier in the day. Bring a mask with a clear lens for photography, and consider using a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer, as currents can pick up in the afternoon. Always avoid touching the statues or standing on them, since they are part of a conservation project.
